Why Swan Labs is being built in Perth
Building a product company in one of the world's most isolated cities is a deliberate choice. Here's the thinking behind it.
Perth is often described as the most isolated capital city in the world. For a software company, that's usually framed as a disadvantage — too far from the big markets, too small a talent pool, too quiet. We see it differently.
Distance is a feature
Being far from the noise means we get to think clearly about what we're building. We're not surrounded by the same handful of trends being repeated at every event. We can look at the actual problems people in Australian work and everyday life have, and build for those instead of for a pitch competition.
It also means we build for a real place. When we test whether Swan Chat understands Australia — our spelling, our suburbs, our school systems, the way people here actually talk — we're testing against the city we live in, not an abstraction.
Building for Australians, starting at home
Swan Labs is Australian-focused to begin with, and Western Australian first within that. SchoolMaps, the first major product we're developing, is being built around WA families comparing schools, catchments and suburbs. We can do that well because we understand the context directly.
Starting local isn't a limitation on ambition. It's how you build something genuinely good before you scale it. A product that works properly for families in Perth will be far easier to extend to families in Adelaide or Brisbane than a generic tool that works properly for nobody.
A company, not a campaign
Swan Labs is founder-led and built directly by the people creating its products. We're not a large team pretending to be small, or a small team pretending to be large. That honesty matters to us, and being based here makes it easier to keep.
We also intend to give back to the place we're building in. Once Swan Labs is sustainably profitable, we intend to allocate 10% of profit to Western Australian community and public-interest initiatives, and to publish what we do transparently. That's a commitment for the future, not a claim about today — but it's part of why being built in Perth matters to us.
Technology should strengthen the place it comes from. We intend to prove that's possible from here.
